At the age of 40, age starts telling on our body and a lot of hormonal changes happen.  This increases the risks of complications in pregnancy and delivery hence when older and pregnant, it is termed high risk.

One of these changes happens to our ovaries as they gradually begin to make less estrogen. It usually starts in a woman’s 40s, but has been known to start in some women’s 30s and even earlier.

Once a woman has gone a year without seeing her period, she has reached menopause. However, pregnancy is still possible during perimenopause until postmenopausal stage.

Perimenopause is the transition period before menopause, where the female body begins to make changes in preparation for menopause. These are the symptoms to look out for if you are experiencing perimenopause;

  • Hot flashes – if it’s cold and you are sweating…you are perimenopausal
  • Breast tenderness – periods and pregnancy too can cause this lol
  • Worse premenstrual syndrome – ok
  • Lower sex drive – ok
  • Fatigue – our toddlers and an unbearable boss can cause this too
  • Irregular periods – except you are born with this…a good sign
  • Vaginal dryness; discomfort during sex – STD’s too can cause this so be sure
  • Urine leakage when coughing or sneezing – ok this is confirmed
  • Urinary urgency (an urgent need to urinate more frequently) – having a baby too can cause this
  • Mood swings – if you are Cancerian like me, you will have this on a reg lol
  • Trouble sleeping – except it is your toddler ensuring you are not sleeping lol

Even though we start experiencing hot flashes and irregular periods, ovulation can still occur during perimenopause. If an egg is released and fertilized, conception can take place.

So if perimenopausal you can look out for your usual ovulation signs like breast tenderness, vaginal discharge or use an ovulation test strips to predict when you are ovulating and get night sexy lingerie on to ensure you get some and get knocked lol.

To increase your chances of conceiving during perimenopause, consult your doctor so you are advised on the steps to take.

You can also boost your chances of getting pregnant by doing the following:

  1. Paying attention to your ovulation: Knowing your signs and symptoms can help you understand when you are ovulating and the best time to try
  • Pay attention to your lifestyle be on the right diet and exercise at least 30minutes a day: A rich, well-balanced, nutritious diet and enough exercise will keep you fit and healthy, this helps to increase your chances of conception
  • Reduce caffeine and alcohol intake: This also tallies with having a balanced diet as alcohol and caffeine can affect your hormones and ability to get pregnant

Medically, you can consider the following even during post-menopausal:

  1. In vitro fertilization (IVF)
  2. Menopause Reversal
  3. Hormone therapy

And if it doesn’t work, don’t spend all your savings to keep trying instead, embrace adoption as it is known to bless families.
